Brief History and Prospect

National Society of Physical Education of the Republic of China was founded in October, 1935 and is the first academic organization for PE studies in our country. In 1972 the Society was restored in Taiwan. Now we have more than 1,ooo members who are either domestic or international professionals mastering relevant PE specialties.

In the early period of our foundation, the Society was located in National Central University in NanJing and was named Republic of China National Society of Physical Education. Three sections, including Compilation, Academics, General Affairs were instituted. Besides, the Society often held PE forums, gave academic speeches, compiled the annual report, published PE periodicals, etc.

During the period of the War of Resistance, because the government moved its Capital to ChungKing, the Society was also restored there in 1938. At that time Dr. Hao Geng-sheng was the president and he continued the major tasks such as extending and promoting the Society, recruiting more members, publishing periodicals, studying PE problems, etc.

When Mainland China fell into enemy’s hands, the government moved to Taiwan. The Society’s affairs were once suspended. Only through the efforts and preparatory projects of the domestic and international fellow colleagues could the Society be restored in June, 1972. Dr. Hao Geng-sheng served the director-general, Dr. Wu Wen-zong the secretary-general. The site of the Society remains in NTNU till now.

In 1976, the Society was reorganized. Dr. Wu Wen-zong succeeded as the third-termed director-general. During Wu’s tenure, Qi Pei-in and Tang Ge-xin were the successive secretary-generals, who actively promoted the Society’s affairs. Besides formulating the annual work projects, they held seminars and symposiums, published the Society’s news dispatch, and compiled the PE library catalogue and Physical Education Dictionary.

In January 1979 and January 1981, Dr. Jian Yao-hui was elected as the fourth-termed and fifth-termed director-general and Xu Yi-xiong was employed as the secretary-general. Grounded in the past fine basis, the Society emphasized particularly the international communication in PE academics, besides continuing the Society’s extension and research achievements. In these four years, the Society took charge of many international PE academic symposiums which were well accomplished and efficacious, winning national and international respect and praise.

In May 1982, the society established twelve committees, including PE Administration, PE History, PE Principles, PE Physiology, PE Psychology, School PE, Leisure Activities, Sports Training Methods, Women Sports, PE Examination and Evaluation, and PE Biochemistry, all of whom actively studied PE theories in different fields and expected that the PE academics could become more specialized and scientific in our country.

In March 1983, the Society held a re-election. Dr. Jian Yao-hui continued to succeed as the sixth-termed director-general, Mr. Xu Yi-xiong was honorably appointed as the vice-director, and Dr. Qiu Jin-song was employed as the secretary-general.

In 1985, Dr. Xu Yi-xiong was honorably appointed as the seventh-termed director-general, Dr. Qiu Jin-song was the vice-director, and Xu Shu-yuan was the secretary-director.

In 1987, Dr. Xu Yi-xiong continued to succeed as the eighth-termed director-general, Mr. Huang Xian-jian was honorably appointed as the vice-director, and Wang Zong-ji was the secretary-general.

In 1989, Dr. Lin Zheng-chang was honorably appointed as the director-general, Mr. Huang Xian-jian the vice-director, and Dr. Fang Jin-long the secretary-general.

In 1991, Mr. Zhuo Jun-chen was appointed as the tenth-termed secretary-general.

In 1993, Mr. Xu Shu-yuan was honorably appointed as the eleventh-termed director-general, Dr. Fang Jin-long the vice-director, and Mr. Zhuo Jun-chen continued to be the secretary-general.

In 1995, Mr. Xu Shu-yuan contined to be the twelfth-termed director-general, Dr. Fang Jin-long continued to be the vice-director, and Mr. Liao Gui-di was the secretary-general

In 1987, Dr. Fang Jin-long was honorably appointed as the thirteenth-termed director-general, Mr. Zhuo Jun-chen the vice-director, Mr. Qian Ji-ming the secretary-general.

In 1999, Dr. Fang Jin-long continued to be the fourteenth-termed director-general, Mr. Zhuo Jun-chen the vice-director, Mr. Qian Ji-ming the secretary-general.

In 2001, Mr. Zhuo Jun-chen was honorably appointed as the fifteenth-termed director-general, Mr. Qian Ji-ming the vice-director, and Yang Zhong-ziang the secretary-general.

In 2003, Mr. Zhuo Jun-chen continued to be the fifteenth-termed director-general, Mr. Zheng Zhi-fu the vice-director, and Yang Zhong-ziang continued to be the secretary-general.

In 2005, Mr. Zheng Zhi-fu was honorably appointed as the seventeenth-termed director-general, Mr. Zhuo Jun-ling the vice-director and Mr. Shi Zhi-ping the secretary-general. They are responsible for the development of the Society’s affairs, which aim to unite those who are interested in PE academics, realize their collaboratory functions, promote the PE academics standards, achieve the academic effects, and expect to further contribute to our society and nation.
